The Niacin Detox – Will it Flush Your Toxins Away?

SHOWING THE WORDS NIACIN FLUSHNiacin is a form of vitamin B3 and in high enough doses gives the well known sensation called the "Niacin Flush". This is a sensation of blushing and prickling over the face and body and in some people may last 30 minutes.

The amount of Niacin needed to get the Niacin flush depends on the individual – I have taken 100 mg of Niacin daily for decades and never had one flush. One day I may take a few extra pills and find out!

The Niacin flush happens because Niacin produces vasodilation or an opening and broadening of the blood vessels in the skin.

What Does Niacin in the Body Do?

Back to basics – Niacin cures Pellagra – a disease involving rough skin, diarrhoea and dementia. In fact the problems seen in Pellagra patients are similar to those in Schizophrenia and have led to treatment of Schizophrenics with high dose Niacin.

And Niacin pitches in and does the basic job of the B vitamins which is to help with the metabolism of foods and the extraction of energy from them

In addition niacin improves the fat profile in the blood – LDL being lowered and HDL increased. Why take statins which seem to have so many side effects when you can take Niacin?

OK that sounds good but what about Detox? Can Niacin Detox?

Well detoxifying alcohol is part of the job of the Liver. We evolved the ability to cope with alcohol to be able to handle fruit that ferments rapidly in a hot climate producing alcohol.

Here is how it looks as a Chemical Reaction:

In Plain English Alcohol plus Niacin changes into Ethanal and a different form of Niacin.

Or in a Chemistry equation language…


This is the first stage or first Phase of the detoxification of alcohol and only works if Niacin is present.

This is a specific example of Niacin being helpful in supporting the detoxification of a toxin. many other toxins are detoxified in the Liver and in this process various vitamins and minerals are used.

Niacin and vitamin C are amongst the most useful vitamins used in the liver detoxification process and zinc and magnesium are 2 of the crucial minerals.

So Niacin does help detox your body but not by causing the Niacin Flush! Niacin does not flush the toxins out of your body like water flushes "poo" out of a toilet bowl!

If Niacin gives you a flush then take it with a meal or just use divided doses but do not use timed release tablets since they seem to cause liver damage according to some reports I have seen. The natural form is best – just niacin!

To sum up…..

Niacin powers the quiet chemistry of magical transformation in the liver where poisons are made safe and our blood is purified. So the Niacin Detox works but not how most people think it works

All we have to do is eat a diet that gives the liver the niacin, vitamin C, zinc and other vitamins and minerals that it needs.


How To Do a Lung Detox

This is odd really because they are obviously crucial to our health and our survival and they are always busy taking in oxygen from the air and expelling carbon dioxide.

Along with the air we breathe come toxins – smoke, particles and pollen.

The lungs are "Front line" organs just like the stomach they bear the brunt of the environment hitting them.

And when that environment has toxins from exhaust smoke, tobacco smoke or particulates from construction or other industrial activity the lungs show the signs of damage which of course we do not see!

Detoxifying your lungs starts with "Removing the Cause"

We start to cure any disease or remedy any condition by stopping it getting worse. In Naturopathy this is summed up as, "Remove the cause". Whether that means using an air filter or ceasing to smoke without cutting the intake of toxins detox cannot start.

If the toxins are from tobacco products and you cannot stop then consider using nicotine patches. Yes nicotine is a toxin but breaking the habit to smoke is crucial since it stops the act of lighting up and breathing the combustion products and smoke and it stops further damage to the lungs.

It is because the lungs have such tremendous over capacity for our normal lives that people can lose lung function by smoking for year after year before it becomes obvious to them how damaging smoking really is.

To Detox the lungs we need to realise that toxins do not sit meekly in the lungs doing nothing. Toxins cause trouble and the trouble usually means inflammation.

1. Reduce all the exposure to particles.pollen and animal dander that you can. This simply adds to the burden the lungs carry all day and night. At the very least keep your sleeping area scrupulously dust and animal free.

2. Reduce allergic foods in your diet. A dietrich in greens and other superfoods will supercharge you with thevitality that your lungs are struggling to provide.

3.Blood sugar control is essential. Sugar must be removed from your diet along with fruit juices. When your blood sugar is doing a roller coaster your blood is flooded with adrenaline and cortisol making it hard or impossible to relax and breath normally.

4.Stress control is the other side of controlling blood sugar. Do all you can to reduce the pressure on you and your lifestyle. Nothing is more important than restoring full function of your lungs!


5.Now would be the time to learn to breath properly and yes I know that sounds odd. Babies always breath properly – you can see their belly move when they breath. We should just copy them! When you breath in the belly should push out and when you relax on the breathing out your belly should just relax back into place. This is usually the opposite of what most people do and is why we do not relax and flow into nature– we are fighting our natural way of breathing. Any gentle yoga class will help you get to breath properly.

Is This 3 Step Method the Best Parasite Cleanse?

wormlike parasiteParasites are those nasty things that only other people get, right? Wrong – parasites are all around us and within us too. They are very common so it makes sense on a blog about Natural Detox to discuss the topic.

Still we'd be shocked and embarrassed if we found out that we had parasites and needed a parasite cleanse. We expect to de worm our pet dogs every so often but we somehow fail to recognise that we are vulnerable too.

Since we are all vulnerable let's just take a look at the details and then move on to a 3 Step Treatment.

What exactly is a Parasite?

Parasites are organisms that live on us or in us entirely for their own benefit. Viruses and bacteria are parasites that we are used to hearing about and provoke no particular emotional response but fleas, tapeworms and flukes are another matter entirely.

How Did I get Parasites?

Some like pinworms, also called threadworms, you can get just by touching someone who has pinworms already. Others you can get from pets. And we can get them from food too, especially meat.None of this means that people who have worm are dirty or unhealthy.

How do I get rid of them?

The obvious answer is to reach for taint-helminthic herbs. Having parasites is an ancient problem and many herbs are known for their traditional use against parasites.

Whether or not you reach for the anti-parasite herbs immediately is a moot point and can only be decided with professional guidance but unless you have an emergency I'd advise a 3 step approach.

Why 3 Steps to a Parasite Cleanse?

It is the same basic reasoning described in my Detox book. I mention parasites briefly in there but they really are a special issue and rather separate from Detox. But the same logic holds, so here goes…..

Step 1

This takes a few days to a few weeks depending on how fast you want to clean your diet up. For intestinal worms getting your diet right is a major step to eliminating the parasites.

I'd recommend a vegetarian diet for a while and I'd include a liberal amount of garlic, pumpkin seeds and cayenne pepper.

Other obvious foods would include real yogurt –live yogurt with no fruit in it and other fermented foods such as sauerkraut too. This helps to create an environment in your body that is very kind to your stomach and guts and unfriendly to the parasites.

Step 2

Before launching into killing the parasites we need to prepare the gut at least a little. Either take a well-designed formula for healing and strengthening the gut such as Permatrol or a personal treatment protocol from your health professional.

Step 3

Now you are ready or as ready as you ever will be! The purpose of the first 2 steps is partially to protect you from the side effects of dealing with the parasites because if the treatment kills the worms or eggs then you will have dead and dying parasites in your body until they are expelled in your faeces or dealt with by your immune system.

These dead critters in your system may produce symptoms of fever as your body works to protect itself.

Why is this Method the Best Parasite Cleanse?

So let's imagine you read that the way to be rid of parasites is to take a traditional herb like Wormwood. Taking that without going through the 2 previous steps of cleaning up and optimizing your diet and healing your gut exposes you to extra toxins and risk for no good reason.

That, in a nutshell is why this 3 Step Process is the best parasite cleanse!

Other Cleaning Techniques you can use

Before we get down to herbals let's just remind you of a couple of solid cleansing techniques – enemas and minerals baths.

Each of these is a complete blog post on its own and I have described both in my book. My advice for enemas is to do 2 brief enemas with pure water and follow up with one in which you use liquid chlorophyll in the enema liquid or any mild and suitable herbal tea.

For the mineral bath popping a cupful of Epsom salts in your bath water is a super simple and effective cleanser. Half a cup of sodium bicarb is an optional extra.

So now we turn to "the big guns" the anti-helminthic herbs. Please note carefully that you cannot use these herbs during pregnancy!

As may be expected you have a decision to take. You can either go herb shopping and buy a whole slew of herbs such as Wormwood, Black walnut, Tansy and Quassia amongst others.


My advice has always been to go for a well-designed formula with a decent track record from a reliable source.

If you have a good herbal supplier near you then by all means see what they have to offer. This anti-parasite product is a good example of what to look for.

Are Detox Foot Patches the Easy Way to Detox?

In a controversial area such as detox this is probably the most controversial method that I have ever seen. Detox foot patches also called detox foot pads are fitted to the soles of your feet as you sleep overnight.

When the pads are removed in the morning they are claimed to have absorbed toxins from your body. They are often found to be smelly and discoloured.

You will find a lot of mixed opinions on this. Certainly the procedure is effortlessly easy and rather unlikely to me at least as a detox technique.

But this is something we would all love to be effective!

After all who wants to drink green juices for months or drink a mix of psyllium husks with water as part of a colon cleanse or take our Milk Thistle and Dandelion herbal teas and tinctures for a liver detox if all we needed to do was…..go to sleep with a foot patch on and wake up detoxed!

So what's going on? Is this real or is it a gimmick?

Well the foot patches are not a recent fad. They have been around for 4 years at least and are not to be confused with the foot pads used by Podiatrists and Chiropractors when they are working to support our humdrum foot problems like fallen arches, corns and walking difficulties.

There are several brands of detox foot patch –Kinoki, Chikusaku, Takara to name a few. All are claiming that the pads or patches detox the body but where is the proof they claim to have?

The finding that the detox foot pads pads are smelly and stained in the morning means very little. Toxins such as heavy metals or "gender bending" environmental estrogens can hardly be expected to produce such an effect and there are little to no other facts or tests to look at despite the claims.

Scientific claims that I cannot check or verify in some way are simply not believable.

A few years ago some scientists made claims that energy was being produced by a battery cell device they constructed and that the energy produced was nuclear energy.

This claim that "cold nuclear fusion" was occurring caused a huge ruckus and many experimental groups tried to check the results. After a while it seemed that the whole thing was hoopla. No solid results could be found to support the claims.

My position is that it is fine to talk about detox and traditional Chinese or Oriental medicine but when push comes to shove there is no proof for detox by foot pad and we are all left looking at testimonials and wondering if there is anything real?

Detox is a real and valid proccess and set of procedures to eliminate toxins from the liver and from the fat cells of your body and all this can be measured and verified.

But if health claims are made but not backed up and no proof is forth coming even after multiple challenges then we can just smile and get on with the rest of our day…..

Unless I can see some scientific experimental laboratory proof I'll regard detox foot patches as "pending validation" at best and an outright scam at worst.

Second thoughts

Putting herbal and other medical ingredients on a cloth / patch / pad is what a poultice is and people have been using herbal poultices for centuries.

Suppose we just forget the word "detox" here and regard these foot patches in the same way we look at foot baths and other topical treatments?

We may find that some of these "foot poultices" have genuine therapeutic effect and an effect that is not connected to detox at all.
